The Wedding Slideshow

Above is the beautiful Wedding Slideshow that came with Nathan & Mackenzie’s wedding. It was created from a selection of photos that tell the story of the couple’s wedding day.

NATHAN GETTING READY IN STYLE

The wedding truly begins with preparations and the magic is in the details. Our day began at The Best Western Plus Fort Saskatchewan Inn & Suites. With cool axes with his name, the coordinating boutonnière and cufflinks, and the perfect shoes to compliment his outfit, the groom didn’t take any chances for his big day. Nathan’s dad also gave us #dadgoals with their heartfelt picture together. The groomsmen pulled all stops to showcase their support too! With matching axes and coordinated outfits, they made a great party!

MACKENZIE GETTING READY TO IMPRESS

The preparations showed throughout the day, with a dashing ring bearer who meant business and props for making a special announcement.
Mackenzie got ready at a rustic house near the wedding venue. We got some pictures of the bride and her mom sharing some cute moments. She rocked her tattoos and really let her personality shine through. What is more badass than being a work of art on your big day?

THEIR CEREMONY IN A UNIQUE LOCATION

The ceremony took place in an unusual off-path location near a highway. The details really added to the day. From their furry friend Misha to the little surprise they had for the wedding guests. The rings were escorted by an efficient young man who took his job very seriously. Nathan and Mackenzie said their vows in standing at a rustic setting with a really cool compass, some buckets full of flowers and eyes full of love!
We love food. Apparently these two do too! Instead of having a cake, they had a donut tower by The Italian Bakery. You heard it right. Not only were they pretty as a bunch but also delicious!

FAMILY PHOTOS

We were able to capture the warmth and love that the whole family had for these two and we’re so glad we did! We recognise that family is an important part of their happiness so it’s only appropriate to save those memories right at the location of the ceremony! We are sure they will always look back on these with fondness.

CREATIVE FORMALS TO CHERISH

The day was perfect for taking some beautifully lit photos. One of our favourite shots is the one with Mackenzie on a bench and Nathan pecking her cheek. It truly reminds one of a storybook romance.
Have you ever wondered what a ‘perfect ending’ looks like?
It looks like all those gooey eyes that give us serious wedding fever, but also some truly special moments where it’s just the two of them. The bridal party helped make the pictures so much cuter! We are just glad to have been there to capture it all!

THE RECEPTION

Some ceremonies truly turn out to perfectly. This was one of them. But the reception topped the list for the most fun event! Nathan and Mackenzie used cute props to announce that they are expecting a baby! Not surprisingly, the audience got really emotional. All that happiness in one room was truly spectacular to witness. So we got to do some pre-baby photos which the couple showed in a slideshow at the wedding! The audience oohed and aahed at some really heartfelt toasts and many tears and laughs were shared.
Nathan and Mackenzie started the part with a first dance and then everyone truly took it off! The DJ kept the party rocking and the groomsmen wowed with some fantastic moves. The bride and groom also came for one last showdown too!
We were also able to capture the classic moments to catch the flying bouquet as Mackenzie tossed it.

It was amazing to work with Mackenzie and Nathan on their wedding day and we are honored to have been a part of their story! You can check out the rest of our work on our blog.

The Wedding Slideshow

Above is the beautiful Wedding Slideshow that came with Veronica & Daniel’s wedding. It was created from a selection of photos that tell the story of the couple’s wedding day.

CREATIVE FORMALS AT THE TAVERN & LOUISE MCKINNEY RIVERFRONT PARK

Our day began at the Tavern, a cool rustic location the couple chose. Daniel stood waiting for bride with his back turned. Veronica walked up to him and put her hand on his shoulder. Called the first look, this little tradition was so adorable.
We also took some great shots at another beautiful location, the Louise Mckinney Riverfront Park. Even by the River Valley, the couple’s love brought out all the warmth in the pictures!

THEIR CEREMONY AT THE THE COUNTRY LODGE

For a couple this cool, what is more, suitable than a cabin with gorgeous grounds?
The ceremony took place in The Country Lodge. Charming and quaint, it was the perfect little venue for a cute wedding. Veronica and Daniel did things unconventionally. Daniel stood waiting for bride at the altar with his back turned. Veronica walked up to him and put her hand on his shoulder. Called the first look, this little tradition was so adorable. The whole ceremony was full of these sweet moments between the two and we couldn’t get enough of it!

THE RECEPTION AT THE COUNTRY LODGE

After the ceremony, we were able to get some pictures of the adorable couple and their family. The first dance was a showstopper! The guest swooned and all lights were on the couple. We were able to get some really fun shots of people dancing, the meaningful looks between the couple and all the love in the room!

It was amazing to work with Daniel & Veronica on their wedding day and we are honored to have been a part of their story! You can check out the rest of our work on our blog.

The Wedding Slideshow

Above is the beautiful Wedding Slideshow that came with Rhonda and Gordon’s wedding. It was created from a selection of photos that tell the story of the couple’s wedding day.

Gordon Getting Ready

Our day began at Gordon’s house, amongst friends and with some truly delicious coffee (much called for at 6 am in the morning!). Gordon was surrounded by groomsmen and made use of his much cherished coffee maker for a wake up call. The young men were a striking sight in their blue coats ready to support their friend on his special day. The color combo of classic blue and grey added a nice contrast to the pictures and a coffee toast ended the dress up session.

Rhonda Getting Ready

Rhonda was to be found at her parent’s place preparing for the big day and she chose the traditional red dress for the first half of the day. She looked stunning!
The groom had to pay his dues to see the lovely bride. According to chinese tradition, the groom must earn the first sight. At the door, the men found their way blocked by determined bridesmaids refusing to “surrender” the bride. While they negotiated they enjoyed some lemonade, chicken and after sufficient hong bao, the groom was let in.

Rhonda was escorted by her dad and she along with Gordon then took part in the tea ceremony. Both served tea to the bride’s parents as an expression of respect. They did the same at the groom’s house where Gordon’s dad impressed with his culinary skills and the family enjoyed a lovely meal together before the ceremony.

THEIR CEREMONY AT THE ALBERTA ART GALLERY , EDMONTON

For a love like art, what better place to exhibit than the gallery?
The ceremony took place in The Theatre at the Alberta Art Gallery. Simple and elegant, it made for the perfect setting to enjoy traditional games and cherished moments with loved ones. The wedding involved a really fun game with shoes and a competition between the bride and groom. Both had to answer questions about each other and the crowd had a really good time!
It was a beautiful ceremony and the love was everywhere. We were just glad we caught some on camera!

CREATIVE FORMALS AT ALBERTA ART GALLERY

The location is as unique as the couple themselves. With its long windows and outstanding architecture, we were able to get some truly special photos. We also took some gorgeous shots on the roof of the gallery, with perfect lightning and the right weather, they turned out stunning! Talk about putting the love on top!

THE RECEPTION AT BEIJING BEIJING RESTAURANT

The reception was held in a cute, family style restaurant. It was intimate, simple and just perfect. There the couple wowed everyone with the classic ‘I Do’ by 98 degrees in a sweet first dance. The father daughter dance left everyone in tears (the good kind!). A small cake cutting ceremony followed, adding just the right sweetness to the day and a final dance wrapped up the ceremony perfectly.

It was amazing to work with Rhonda and Gordon on their wedding day and we are honored to have been a part of their story! You can check out the rest of our work on our blog.

Wanna Get Married in the Middle of a River on top of a Bridge?

Imagine having a wedding where your really close friends and loved ones are sitting with you in a street car. The street car itself is slowly moving on an beautiful wrought iron bridge in the middle of a river. On both side of the bridge are beautiful vistas of the Edmonton River Valley. That is what the Edmonton Radial Railway Society has to offer.

The Edmonton Radial Railway Society hosts three beautiful vintage street cars. These railcars are a beautiful window into the bygone Era of streetcars and Edmonton’s past. I had the distinct pleasure of photographing a wedding in one of these streetcars and I can freely admit, it was by far the coolest wedding I have EVER photographed. The couple (Steve & Nicole – Check out their wedding here!), loved the unique experience they had for their ceremony.

The Streetcar can accommodate up to 30 people and has space for a small intimate ceremony. The Railcar station near Whyte Avenue is in itself a unique and amazing location for wedding and engagement photos! You can check out this engagement session we photographed there.

10 Tips to Save Money on Your Wedding // Edmonton Wedding Photographer

Save money on your wedding! Detail photographs from various weddings in Edmonton, Alberta

10 Tips to Save Money on Your Wedding

We love to envision our big day as an extravagant, over-the-top celebration sparing no cost. With multi-thousand dollar dresses, diva bands and those infamous catering costs, it is so easy to get lost in the decision-making process when it comes to swiping that credit card. The national average for a wedding is over $20,000, and stunning research shows one-third of couples get themselves into debt for their wedding day. To help avoid this rocky start to the most exciting time of your life, I have created a comprehensive list of the 10 best ways to save money on your wedding. You don’t have to have a ceremony that looks cheap for it to be cheaper!

Save money on your wedding! Detail photographs from various weddings in Edmonton, Alberta

1. First, Prioritize

The first thing you need to do is sit down with your partner and decide what it is that is really important to each of you in the wedding. A lot of couples don’t make a list of priorities, so as planning moves along they find themselves spending more freely on the decisions made early thus, leaving a smaller budget toward things they might forget about later down the road. The dress may be worth to you than spending a couple of extra thousand on décor, or maybe you would rather spend more on the cake than worry about getting that expensive pair of shoes. Each couple is completely different on where they lay their priorities. The biggest example of this is the size of the ceremony: if you’re wanting to spend more on food, decoration, and other things, you may definitely want to cut the guest list down.

2. DSY: Do Some Yourself!

While this option is not for everyone, if you or your bridal team are slightly crafty, you may consider hitting up Pinterest or check out what’s airing on the DIY Network for this tip. These days many people are opting for creating their own decorations, mostly because the how-tos and tutorials on how to make things are so accessible and easy to follow. You can create your own centerpieces or do some origami flowers! The only caution I offer is to not overdo it on the DIY projects. You don’t want it all to turn out like a hodge-podge.

3. Avoid Peak Times

Timing is crucial when you’re trying to save money. Venues, caterers, florists and more will tend to charge more during the “peak times”. This includes season, day of the week and time of day. Peak seasons include the months of June through September and these are months you want to avoid. October is a little less busy than the rest of those months, but the slowest months are going to be January through April (May is a toss up.) The exception to this is Valentine’s Day, of course, which as you can imagine is one of the busiest days of the year.

To save money on which day you pick, you may want to go for a weekday.  Sure, it’s a little less convenient for your guests in some situations, but it is always cheaper than a Saturday (the busiest day) and even a Sunday. As far as time of day goes, doing one earlier in the morning saves you money for several reasons: mostly on food. You can get away with serving less food AND alcohol if you have an earlier time for your ceremony because breakfast/lunchtime allows for lighter menus.

4. Ditch the Band

Often times hiring a DJ over a band is not only cheaper but it is becoming the preferred method of entertainment at the reception. Bands usually charge based off of when your wedding is and they pay each member separately, leaving you to pick up the tab for at least two people (though bands usually have at least four members.)

If you find a talented DJ, he can double for the emcee which is helpful to move the reception along and entertaining as well. There is almost always more variety in the songs a DJ can include on his set, too. You can be specific about what you do and do not want played at the reception and sometimes they have an option where they take requests if that’s something you would like to have for your guests’ experience!

5. Flowers

The best way to save money on flowers is definitely not to have too many flowers and that is obvious. But this classic and beautiful decoration is one most people don’t want to flat-out say no to. There are ways to be smart and save though. Always buy locally and whatever is in season. Different flowers grow abundantly in one area but may not grow at all if you go to another state or even in a different month of the year. After you book the date, do some research. Call your local florist and ask what they will have around that time and even if you can get a discount for asking so far in advance (if you call soon after deciding)!

Also, a way to cut costs is to “recycle” the flowers used in the ceremony in the reception as table centerpieces or to decorate the room. If flowers are very low on your priority list, consider using lighting as a way to decorate instead.

6. Don’t Spend Too Much on One Item

Refer back to your priority list on this one. Yes, while you may allot more money to one thing than another, it still isn’t wise to put all your eggs in one basket. One thing many couples forget costs so much and accidentally end up splurging on is the alcohol tab. And while a few of you may want to hear this, the truth behind spending a whole lot of money on your dress is this: the dress, for the most part, does not enhance the experience for the guests. So yes, you deserve to look and feel like the beautiful princess you are that day! Just remember that spending an exorbitant amount on that one item won’t make the entire day much better than it would if you spent half as much.  Next are tips on how you can do just that.

7. Deals on That Dress

There are many ways you can save money on the traditional white gown. The best is to go for “something borrowed”: utilize your mother’s or mother-in-law’s old gown. A good seamstress will charge nowhere near what a new dress would cost for some alterations. If not that, why not consider buying a dress worn only once before? These dresses will come drastically cheaper. Another option is to rent your gown or check online auctions. A good resource to check out similar options is preownedweddingdresses.com. Have an open mind while considering these options.

8. Save Money on Venue

Your first instinct may be to Google “(your town) best wedding venue”, which is not a bad place to start. The issue with doing this is it pops up heavily popular and usually highly expensive options. If you’re looking for something cheaper and more unique, this is not the way to go. National Parks and campgrounds make excellent scenery and are far cheaper. Another idea along those lines are museums and art galleries. This definitely offers a more special experience.

If you know someone with a lot of property (or have a friend of a friend of a friend,) don’t be afraid to ask if you can hold your ceremony there! The worst they can say is “no”. You can offer money but don’t feel like you need to fork out a ton.

9. Catering Crisis

As mentioned before, be sure to schedule your reception around times you could offer less food and alcohol (in the mornings or early afternoon). Breakfast and lunch are the lightest meals of the day, and people are far less likely to indulge on drinks if it is still daytime. You can also go for the newer trend to serve mostly hors d’oeuvres or have a decorative cupcake display instead of a grandiose cake.

As far as the bar goes: this can be pricey but if you’re smart about it, you can easily cut costs. If your venue is running the bar, they will often charge retail prices or even mark up prices per cocktail. You can mix your own and save hundreds. Go for the cheaper wines, you won’t offend anyone (to be honest, most can’t even tell!) Some couples even crowdsource and ask people to bring bottles of their favorites.

10. Be Smart With Space

If you want to save money on both a venue and lodging, rent a house. This is a fantastic idea to save some money if you have a lot of out-of-town guests and if it is a nice place, it can double as the place you hold your ceremony! It will be more intimate than a large venue and you can get more comfortable like this.

Another way to be smart with space and save money is holding your reception and ceremony in the same place. If you do spring for a venue then why not get the most use out of it? It is not unpopular for couples to do the ceremony, quickly turn around and use that same space to resume with the reception. If you do this you can come up with interesting ideas on how to seat your guests, such as having them sit at their tables during the ceremony.

Tools of the Trade | Wedding Photography Gear

I am infrequently asked “What camera do you use?”. Another common questions is “Canon or Nikon?”. This is my wedding photography gear and I am happy to share it with you 🙂

As an answer to all these questions I am writing the following blog post. It details and describes my gears and choices:

Lets start with the basics:

Nikon vs. Canon:

This is one of the most often asked questions. I use primarily Nikon gear (and no I am not paid to do that!). The reason I prefer Nikon is because that is where I started. Canon is an equally capable brand! I do like the very wide dynamic range that can be found in the camera. This allows me to shoot in a variety of conditions.

The Basics:

I use a DSLR (digital single reflex lens camera). The technical jargon is meant not to confuse but elaborate. I use a variety of lens in combination with my two DSLRs. I also use a variety of lighting gear with a variety of lighting modifiers.

The Camera: D750 x 2

I use two Nikon D750s. These little beautiful monsters work well for the kind of work I do. They perform well under the pressure of a wedding day and allow me to create art pieces for my clients.

Here are a couple of feature I love about this little beauty:

  1. Dual card slots (This allows me to backup any photos that I take to two different cards).
  2. Wide Dynamic Range (Allows me to pull up shadows from any underexposed images in post processing).
  3. Ultra-fast auto focus (This camera has an amazing auto focus system that allows me to nail shots on the first try and never miss a decisive moment.
  4. Light (when you carry a camera and a 70-200 mm 2.8 lens for the entire day during a wedding, any little reduction in weight makes a huge difference!).
  5. Amazing low-light performance (This camera can notch up ISO level to 10,000 without losing any quality. This makes it capable of producing images in near darkness)

The Lenses:

One of the perks of owning a DSLR is the ability to change lenses. I use a variety of lenses from Nikon and sigma and they are detailed below:

  1. Sigma 35mm 1.4 – Art Series

This beautiful beautiful lens is not only one of the most optically correct but also one of the sharpest lenses that I have ever used. It is an absolute beauty and works well in every situation. The 1.4 also helps me shoot in very dark conditions or with very shallow depth of fields allowing for very certain looks in my photos that would otherwise be un-achievable.

  2. Sigma 85mm 1.4

This is another prime lens in my gear bag. This beauty allow me to take amazing portraits that you will often find in my creative formals section. The compression combined with 1.4 aperture allows for some very unique looks.

  3. Nikon 70-200mm 2.8

One of my friend used to call this the ray gun. For good reason too. This is one of my favorite lenses for receptions as it allows me to get candid moments. This beautiful telephoto lens is able to shoot under difficult lighting conditions while allows for vibration reduction thus giving me the ability to get tack sharp photos.

  4. Nikon 60mm 2.8

Nikon made this little beauty thinking about ring shots. Its a nice macro lens that allows me to get up close to the rings thus letting me get amazing ring shots that you can find littered throughout my blog!

Lighting Equipment:

One of my favorite parts about creative formals is creating special lighting. This usually involves me using my trusty YN-560IV flashes as well as lighting modifiers. Here are some photos of the gear I use!

  1. YN560IV Flashes

This little trust flash unit allows me to create special lighting effects. This flash unit has a radio trigger built in that joins with the next device that I am gonna show you.

  2. YN600 Radio Transmitter

This little radio transmitter goes on top of my camera and triggers the flashes at the same time as the shutter clicks thus allowing to control lighting in scenes effectively.

I also use a plethora of other equipment including a carbon fiber tripod, lighting stands, umbrellas, softboxes & diffusers etc.

One essential part of my equipment is my trust Mac book Pro where I edit all the photos!

Feel free to ask me any technical questions in regards to the gear I shared info about!
