Allison’s Portraits at Terwillegar Park, Edmonton Alberta | Edmonton Portrait Photographer

Every now and then I get a chance to collaborate with some amazing individuals in my profession. These rare chances allow me to experiment with new gear, techniques and idea that I would otherwise never try on a client’s shoot. Given these opportunities are rare and far few to my liking, I savor them when they do arrive. Taking portraits at Terwillegar Park was such a opportunity and I ensured we produced some excellent results while having a fun afternoon!

One of these opportunities showed up on in the month of May when I collaborated with Riti Jain from Makeup & Hair by Riti and Allison Martin. Allison was the model while Riti provided us with her expertise of makeup and hair. We choose a wardrobe based around the idea of complimentary colors.

The location was the beautiful Terwillegar Park in Edmonton, Alberta. Its located near the Saskatchewan River but unfortunately we were unable to access the river due to rainy weather conditions.

Here are some of the fantastic images we were able to produce in our collaboration:

portaits-at-terwillegar-park-edmonton-allison-martin-

This particular image was one of the more signature shots that I am able to produce my clients. It utilizes a off camera flash in combination with a very shallow depth of field to produce the beautiful bokeh. The ‘bokeh’ refers to the creamy dissolved background behind the model that ensures that the model stands out from the background.

None of the images would be possible without the assistance of Sharon Martin, Allison’s (awesome) mother! She was not only a trooper in the poor weather conditions but actually managed to crack quite a few jokes (some at my expense!) to keep our spirits up!

Box Cube Photography Strives to provide Edmonton Brides with the best in wedding photography services. Our commitment to your big day goes beyond just the wedding itself, it extends into the wedding planning stage as well. Therefore, these collaborations provide us with significant background info regarding the vendors we recommend to you.

Black and white portraits carry amazing potential due to the fact that they strip away the color that acts as almost a distraction thus leaving us with an uninhibited view of the raw image. The only thing that matters int he image is the subject, the emotion and the action visible within the photo. It is almost a synthesis of pure storytelling without the “fluff” of color. Thus, black and white portraits occupy a special place in my heart!

Tools of the Trade | Wedding Photography Gear

D750 - Nikon Camera

Tools of the Trade | Wedding Photography Gear

I am infrequently asked “What camera do you use?”. Another common questions is “Canon or Nikon?”. This is my wedding photography gear and I am happy to share it with you 🙂

As an answer to all these questions I am writing the following blog post. It details and describes my gears and choices:

Lets start with the basics:

Nikon vs. Canon:

This is one of the most often asked questions. I use primarily Nikon gear (and no I am not paid to do that!). The reason I prefer Nikon is because that is where I started. Canon is an equally capable brand! I do like the very wide dynamic range that can be found in the camera. This allows me to shoot in a variety of conditions.

The Basics:

I use a DSLR (digital single reflex lens camera). The technical jargon is meant not to confuse but elaborate. I use a variety of lens in combination with my two DSLRs. I also use a variety of lighting gear with a variety of lighting modifiers.

The Camera: D750 x 2

I use two Nikon D750s. These little beautiful monsters work well for the kind of work I do. They perform well under the pressure of a wedding day and allow me to create art pieces for my clients.

D750 - Nikon Camera D750 - Nikon Camera

Here are a couple of feature I love about this little beauty:

  1. Dual card slots (This allows me to backup any photos that I take to two different cards).
  2. Wide Dynamic Range (Allows me to pull up shadows from any underexposed images in post processing).
  3. Ultra-fast auto focus (This camera has an amazing auto focus system that allows me to nail shots on the first try and never miss a decisive moment.
  4. Light (when you carry a camera and a 70-200 mm 2.8 lens for the entire day during a wedding, any little reduction in weight makes a huge difference!).
  5. Amazing low-light performance (This camera can notch up ISO level to 10,000 without losing any quality. This makes it capable of producing images in near darkness)

The Lenses:

One of the perks of owning a DSLR is the ability to change lenses. I use a variety of lenses from Nikon and sigma and they are detailed below:

  1. Sigma 35mm 1.4 – Art Series

This beautiful beautiful lens is not only one of the most optically correct but also one of the sharpest lenses that I have ever used. It is an absolute beauty and works well in every situation. The 1.4 also helps me shoot in very dark conditions or with very shallow depth of fields allowing for very certain looks in my photos that would otherwise be un-achievable.

Sigma 35 mm 1.4 Art Series

Sigma 35 mm 1.4 Art Series

  2. Sigma 85mm 1.4

This is another prime lens in my gear bag. This beauty allow me to take amazing portraits that you will often find in my creative formals section. The compression combined with 1.4 aperture allows for some very unique looks.
    sigma 85 mm 1.4 sigma 85 mm 1.4

  3. Nikon 70-200mm 2.8

One of my friend used to call this the ray gun. For good reason too. This is one of my favorite lenses for receptions as it allows me to get candid moments. This beautiful telephoto lens is able to shoot under difficult lighting conditions while allows for vibration reduction thus giving me the ability to get tack sharp photos.
    Nikon 70-200 mm 2.8 Nikon 70-200 mm 2.8

  4. Nikon 60mm 2.8

Nikon made this little beauty thinking about ring shots. Its a nice macro lens that allows me to get up close to the rings thus letting me get amazing ring shots that you can find littered throughout my blog!

Lighting Equipment:

One of my favorite parts about creative formals is creating special lighting. This usually involves me using my trusty YN-560IV flashes as well as lighting modifiers. Here are some photos of the gear I use!

  1. YN560IV Flashes

This little trust flash unit allows me to create special lighting effects. This flash unit has a radio trigger built in that joins with the next device that I am gonna show you.
    DSC_5001

  2. YN600 Radio Transmitter

This little radio transmitter goes on top of my camera and triggers the flashes at the same time as the shutter clicks thus allowing to control lighting in scenes effectively.
    DSC_5019

I also use a plethora of other equipment including a carbon fiber tripod, lighting stands, umbrellas, softboxes & diffusers etc.

One essential part of my equipment is my trust Mac book Pro where I edit all the photos!

Feel free to ask me any technical questions in regards to the gear I shared info about!

Andrea & Mark’s Engagement Session at Victoria Park Ice Rink in Edmonton

A cold, snowy but beautiful afternoon in Edmonton!

https://vimeo.com/152016877

After having met Andrea and Mark in a cafe over coffee, I knew this session would be amazing. To say that the session went well would be quite an understatement. It was extremely cold that day and it was snowing heavily. Perfect conditions for some amazing snow photos!

This is their story and I am so glad I got to be a part of it!

After having met at the Ranch, Edmonton in 2013 during a party, Mark and Andrea decided there was something to explore beyond friendship here. They started dating shortly afterwards and did not attend many parties thereafter(not being party people themselves!). Being an adventurous couple, they went rock climbing and camping many times. On November 28th, 2015 Mark decided he wanted this beautiful woman to be a permanent part of his life and proposed to her in front of the Alberta Legislature. Andrea accepted and shortly after their engagement they met me and I got to hear this awesome love story. After hearing that both Mark and Andrea were expert ice skaters (Andrea is a figure skater!!), we decided an ice rink was the place to go! Mark and Andrea brought their Oiler’s Jerseys as well to show their love for their home team! Go Oilers!

Mark and Andrea’s Engagement Photos in Edmonton at the Ice Rink

We started off near the entrance of the Victoria Park in Edmonton and booted up to avoid the cold! That is when I started shooting away and saw the magic happen. Yes, Magic aka Love. Andrea and Mark were two bodies but one soul and their smiles and laughs were evidence of their love for each other! Look at these photos and tell me if it isn’t true?

Squirrel! Squirrel! Squirrel!

Well at one point I saw that the snowfall is extremely heavy around where Mark and Andrea were standing. It got me thinking, “How the hell is that possible?”. I look up and there is a squirrel moving the branches causes excess snowfall! Wow… Divine intervention?

Aren’t Engagement Rings Awesome?

Mark and Andrea love hockey and anything related to it. Therefore, their ring had to be hosted on a crow of a hockey puck as seen below!

edmonton-wedding-photographers-box-cube-photography-mark-andrea 3

Because Umbrella!

Now if there is snowfall, my brain defaults “Pretty pictureeesss!”. Mark and Andrea had a particular fascination with One Photo I took for Shahmeran & Tooba a year ago under a lit umbrella with snowfall happening around them. Well,  we had to do that again!

Much as I would like to say that this process is simple and sweet, it’s not. Its fairly complicated and requires a long amount of time which is why it can take up-to 4 weeks for viewing session to happen (keep in mind each photographer is different and it may take them a different amount of time to complete the edits. A common number that I found in my research was 6-8 weeks for other photographers.)

Michael & Ying’s Wedding in Muttart Conservatory, Edmonton, AB

Michael & Ying’s Wedding Muttart Conservatory, Edmonton, AB

Trusting someone with your wedding photos is a big deal and I treat it as such. Michael & Ying hired me to do their wedding photos for their moderate ceremony in Muttart Conservatory. Being the middle February, it had a certain wintery charm to it that you will see in the photos. The wedding took place on 16th February 2015.

Wedding Slideshow:

None of our weddings would be complete without this signature slideshow that showcases some of the photos from the wedding day:

https://vimeo.com/162242203

The wedding ceremony took place at the Muttart Conservatory. It was a simple yet beautiful ceremony that involved a unique sand colored ceremony. The bride also wore a red wedding gown which is quite different from the conventional white. It looked absolutely gorgeous again the white snowy backdrop of a wintery Edmonton. Michael & Ying met at the Universtiy of Alberta while working together on a project. Their story did not end there and they ended up starting a family together.

We went down to the Legislature building to take the formal photos for the bride and groom. It was a majestic and beautiful backdrop for the photos. The architecture of the provincial building combined with the snowy landscape gave us the opportunity to create some amazing images. At one point we were almost frozen down to our toes but thankfully the bride and groom survived without any form of frostbite 😛
