To tan or not to tan? A guide for the bride-to-be!
A Blog Post by Miranda – Owner of Meraki Medical Aesthetics
First of all, congratulations! If you’re reading this, we have to assume you are soon going to be walking down the aisle to the man or woman of your dreams! We all know as a bride, there is nothing that can get in the way of making that vision of your fairy tale wedding come true! But, let’s face it – there’s a lot to consider! Forget about the venue, the decision to have a band or a DJ and all of those big plans for one second. Let’s focus on you – the bride-to-be!
At some point, you will be deciding which hairstyle compliments your dress, the style of makeup you want and the best part – the shoes! But, have you considered whether you should tan prior to your wedding or not to tan? If not, you’re in luck! We have all the juicy details on both options and what is best not only for your big day but for your health and safety long term.
For decades, brides all over the world have desired to have a beautiful, sun-kissed glow for their wedding day. With all of the eyes on you, that subtle hint of the sun helps to even out your complexion, camouflage skin irregularities and let’s be honest – makes you feel like a golden goddess! However, times are changing and science has proven that the old ways of basking in the warmth of a tanning bed probably isn’t the best decision for you.
Did you know that after only one session of using a tanning bed, you can increase your risk of developing melanoma by 20%, squamous cell carcinoma by 67%, and basal cell carcinoma by 29%? Those numbers are scary high and not worth the risk! Not only is your risk of skin cancer increased, but the damage indoor tanning can also have on your skin is no laughing matter. Exposure to UV rays, especially when using tanning beds, is guaranteed to cause premature ageing including wrinkles, fine lines, pigmentation, loss of elasticity and volume and skin laxity. So, the question is, how do you get that golden glow while still protecting yourself from the risks?
Luckily, science and innovation have brought us options! The best way to protect your skin and still get all of those benefits of flawless looking, tanned skin can all be made possible with sunless tanning, otherwise known as a spray tan! We already know what you’re thinking – “But, I don’t want to look orange!”. Neither do we! Not all spray tans turn your skin orange! It all depends on the product that’s used during your appointment, the skill of the spray tan artist and the preparation that is taken before and after the appointment.
Our favourite line of sunless solutions is made by a company called NUDA. Their solutions are free from all major allergens, contain no parabens or harmful chemicals and are vegan and cruelty-free! As a naturally-derived product line, their solutions not only do amazing things for your skin, they smell heavenly and do not cause an orange looking spray tan! With a variety of shades to choose from and additional additives to add to your solution, you are guaranteed to find a shade you love.
Self-tanners have also taken the market by storm! The ability to achieve your glow goals from the comfort of your home is a must-have between appointments. A quick application with NUDA’s Self Tanning Lotion provides a beautiful tan that lasts for up to 10 days. Their full line of products includes a dreamy coffee and coconut body exfoliant, blending brushes, exfoliating mitts, hydrating body lotions and more.
In conclusion, there are alternative options to using a tanning bed. Looking bronzed and beautiful for your wedding day is definitely important. However, the long term effects of basking underneath those UV lights are simply not worth it. We encourage you to do what is best for your skin and your health in the future. When there are better options available, why not utilize them?
