Calgary Family Sessions That Feel Natural

There’s a version of your family right now that doesn’t exist yet in a single good photo. Maybe the last one was two years ago, before your youngest could walk. Maybe everyone looks slightly different now, in ways that are hard to notice day to day but will feel enormous in ten years.

Family photography doesn’t have to be formal. They don’t have to involve coordinated outfits, stiff smiles, and a lot of standing still. The sessions that produce the best photos usually look like a good afternoon out together, the kids running ahead down a trail at Fish Creek, someone picking up the toddler mid-cry and turning it into a laugh, the whole family piling onto a blanket at Bowness Park while the light goes golden behind them.

After 10+ years photographing Calgary families, we’ve learned that the photos people treasure most are rarely the perfectly posed ones. They’re the real, in-between moments nobody planned for.

Calgary gives families a genuine variety of sessions, including wide open parks, forested trails, river pathways, and urban green spaces, all within reach. We know these locations well, and we’ll help you find the one that actually fits your family.

Why Choose Box Cube Studios for Your Calgary Family Session?

Photographing families isn’t the same as photographing couples. Kids don’t take direction. Toddlers have their own fun. Someone is always mid-meltdown, mid-snack, or mid-sprint in the wrong direction. That’s not a problem, that’s the session.

We work with what’s actually happening

After years of photographing Calgary families, we’ve learned that the best moments are usually the unplanned ones. The way your youngest reaches for your hand, the laugh that breaks out unexpectedly, the moment everyone finally relaxes. Those are the photos that end up meaning the most years from now.

We’re good with kids

We photograph kids in a way that keeps the session relaxed, playful, and easy for everyone involved. We know when to keep things moving, when to slow down, and how to help kids forget the camera is there. Parents are always surprised by how natural the whole experience feels.

We know Calgary’s family locations

From stroller-friendly parks to quiet trails and golden-hour spots at Fish Creek and Bowness Park, we know which Calgary photoshoot locations work best for different families, seasons, and energy levels. That local knowledge makes sessions smoother and photos stronger.

Award Recognized

Recognized by Quality Business Awards and Best in Edmonton, but more importantly, trusted by Calgary families who continue coming back year after year.

Calgary’s Best Family Photo Locations

The best location for your family session depends on your kids’ ages, how much walking is realistic, and the kind of photos you’re imagining. Here are the spots we return to most, and who each one works best for.

Baker Park

Sitting on the north bank of the Bow River across from Bowness Park, Baker Park is quieter, more manicured, and beautifully maintained. Paved pathways make it genuinely easy with strollers. The arched structures and river backdrop give a more polished, portrait-style feel than most Calgary parks, without losing any of the natural warmth.

Confederation Park

A northwest Calgary favourite that tends to fly under the radar compared to downtown parks. Curved wooden bridges, large mature trees, a small creek, and soft green open spaces give it a storybook quality that photographs beautifully. Wide paths and gentle terrain make it easy for families of all sizes.

Griffith Woods

Griffith Woods is a park in southwest Calgary that feels genuinely wild, with a spruce forest, the Elbow River, boardwalks, and the kind of light you’d expect to drive an hour for. It’s one of the least discovered parks, which means fewer people in the background and a session that feels like you’ve left the city entirely.

Edworthy Park

Nestled in a valley along the Bow River in southwest Calgary, Edworthy is layered with river access at the bottom, forested hillside in the middle, and open trails throughout. The Douglas Fir Trail runs through towering trees that create a natural canopy unlike anywhere else in the city.

Fish Creek Provincial Park

One of the largest urban parks in Canada, Fish Creek has enough variety within a single park to give you a completely different session depending on where you go. Open meadows, forested trails, creek banks, the historic Bow Valley Ranch, the options are genuinely broad. Families with older kids who like to move around tend to do especially well here.
