Concept shoot for KB Emporia by Shank Couture at Terwillegar Park, Edmonton | Bridal Photos

I had a chance to work with the amazing model Anum Shah and collaborate with Makeup and Hair by Riti for these stylized bridal photos. The dresses in the photos were provided by KB Emporia.

Location: Terwilliger Dog Park, Edmonton AB.

This was stylized shoot where Anum Shah showcased some of the east-Indian/subcontinental bridal clothing from KB Emporia. Amazing hair and makeup by Riti added to the amazing concept. Even though it was fairly cold, our model braved the weather and showcased the dresses amazing well. As collaborations go, this was an awesome one. Anum’s mother, Anjum Shah, came along and assisted me with the shoot which made this shoot an even better one!

Due to my fondness of OCF (off camera flash) we used some special lighting techniques to light up the environment in a specific manner to showcase the beauty of the clothing. We also used some smoke grenades to show the special effect in some of the photos below. As part of an effort to develop relationships with local vendors, I try to establish these collaborations. Not only do they allow us to produce some  great image but also find it if we are potential fits for each others clients.

Nikola and Scott’s Engagement Session in Wetaskiwin, Alberta

I met Nikola and Scott after they saw my post on Facebook looking for newly engaged couples. We met at Block 1912 on Whyte Ave. I got to hear the story of Nikola and Scott; how they met, how they fell in love and how Scott proposed to Nikola.  Having met 11 years ago in Wetaskiwin, Alberta (A beautiful riverside town near Edmonton), this couple decided it was time to marry in 2015. They are set to marry in 2016.

One of the best stories of the proposal that I have heard is their’s: Scott and Nikola have a pumpkin carving competition each year on Halloween. Last year, Scott carved “Marry me” into the pumpkin. It doesn’t get much simpler or better than this folks.

Both Nikola and  Scott are oilers fans as is apparent from their jerseys. They also have a keen eye for beautiful spots around the town. One such spot was on top of a mountain overlooking a frozen lake while the sun was setting. It was pretty cold might I say. As an Edmonton Wedding Photographer, I knew what cold was like but the setting sun was fairly deceptive! Starting around 3:30, we took some photos over the hill top and followed that with a short break at a neighbours house to warm up (Thanks, Neighbour!!!).

After that little break is when the magic started happening, Nikola and Scott had gotten comfortable in front of the camera and the sun was casting a warm orange glow around them. It was like their love glowed around them (cheesy much?).

Motherhood is something that is beautiful beyond the description of words. I feel honored to get a chance to photograph this auspicious event in someone’s life and as such I treat it with extreme care!

Almost a year ago, I took photos for Van and Christina’s couples session that you can see here. It was a beautiful winter session. Recently, Van told me about the baby that was on its way and we went out to get some photos of the couple in the local park where the couple would go for runs during the summer. In order to improve my ability to take portraits, I collaborated with a number of amazing vendors in Edmonton, AB. This include the beautiful model Ashley Prasad and the hair and makeup artist Riti Jain. It was a

I had a chance to work with the beautiful model Ashley Prasad who was adventurous enough to venture out in the cold with me one a journey to the river valley. Here are some of the result o the shenanigans.

Riti Jain of Hair and Makeup by Riti did an amazing job of the makeup!

The photos below were based on a concept edit since I have been working on some new editing and compositing techniques. The whole shoot was based around the idea of the use of the lantern that you see in the image.

52 Skillz with Stephen Robinson // Edmonton Portraits

I had a chance to work with Stephen Robinson who is the creator of  the series called “52 Skillz”. It is the undertaking of an individual where Stephen decided he wanted to learn 52 Different Skillz across 52 weeks and boy has it been a journey. I met Stephen Robinson in eHub at the University of Alberta while he was working on some ideas for his new skill.

He is an extraordinary individual who taught me to challenge myself to learn something new everyday. In his quest to develop a new skill every week, he has been able to demonstrate the ability of humans to adapt and learn at an incredible pace.

His final project was to combine all of the 52 skillz he learnt during the year to make a huge Rube Goldberg Machine. I got a chance to see the machine in action and it was very impressive. Here is the video of the machine in action:

In order to expand my technical skills and to have some fun, I decided it was time to collaborate with some of the other people in the local photography community. This is where I went on to Model Mayhem and got in touch with Katie!

I had no idea what I was getting into….

We planned out the shoot with some vague guidelines and thoughts along the idea of: modelling, posing, Sue Bryce etc. We had a lot of keywords floating around but no clear idea on what we wanted to do really. The location we decide upon was the Terwiliger Dog Park near Rabbit Hills, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. We rolled into the park around 5 PM and started walking towards this “cool” spot which Katie had been to earlier. Let me tell you, it was quite a walk!

Anyway. Following that we started setting up the shoot and in rolled the wind. The wind sent one of the flashes crashing down with the umbrella and I decided I will go “all natural light” for this shoot (personally I LOVVVEEEE using flashes!).

We setup to near this winding path and we got these really cool images! :

Following the path, we went further down the rabbit hole (you get the reference? If not you need to read some books my friend). We found this alcove and then got the following cool iamges:

As you can see, I went a little ham on the editing side of things here but that happens sometimes when you  are distracted….

As I had mentioned earlier, I had no idea what I had gotten myself into… Well what I meant by that was not only did I get a chance to work with this awesome model but I made a friend who shared my love of books and was an awesome gardener as well. She led me further along these tracks and finally to this ravine that touch the river! Oh boy that was perfect timing since we caught the sunset!

52 Skillz Behind the Scenes | Photography Skillz

52 Skillz BTS – Photography

Stephen Robinson is an awesome awesome individual who decided he wanted to learn 52 skills over 52 weeks. He started this project never really expecting the response he saw from it. He has so far been featured on CTV (Canadian National Television Chanel) as well as on other media channels. You just need to see the videos he makes to believe what he is capable of.

Having met him at eHub at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada I got inspired to learn new skills myself. He recently told me that he will be doing the final 52nd Skill soon which will draw an end to the first session of 52 skillz. In order to commemorate the awesome ideas he has had and the final 52nd Skill we decided to collaborate to setup a cool photoshoot. I got a chance to have a look at the last skill (its a secret so don’t ask me to divulge) and very honestly it is one of the best things I have seen so far!

Its ridiculous in its complexity and execution. Its beyond something I had envisioned for sure!
